The Increasing Popularity of Body Jewelry
Body jewelry used to be somewhat of a novelty, because not
many people wore things like nose studs, tongue rings, nipple
shields, belly button rings, and eyebrow rings. Those who
did were thought to be daring and gutsy for doing so.
Now, though, you can purchase nearly any kind of body jewelry
from stores or online. The popularity of such jewelry is
increasing, especially among young people.
These items come in a variety of colors, styles, and
materials. Some are made from gold or silver, while
others are titanium steel or plastic. The material from
which the article is made will determine how much it
costs. Some people prefer the look of gold or silver ones
because they think that plastic ones look “cheap.”
However, the plastic ones can be great for those who have
allergies and are on a tight budget.
Typically, women are the ones who wear jewelry.
However, this is not the case with nose, eyebrow, lip, and
tongue piercings; members of both sexes have such
piercings. Years ago, it was only members of certain
subcultures who sported such looks, such as punks or
goths. Nowadays, people who are not associated with such
groups also enjoy facial piercings.
Teenagers are quite possibly the biggest fans of such
“alternative” jewelry. They may view this as a way to
rebel, and a way to express their individuality. Some
view facial piercings as a visible symbol of
nonconformity. Others just like the look of them, and
might get piercings because celebrities or friends that they
admire have similar piercings. No matter what the
reasons, this is a fad that is rapidly increasing in popularity
all over the nation.
There have been some instances where youth and authority
figures have clashed over this form of self expression.
Some conservative adults are apparently offended by such
piercings, and feel that they are inappropriate in institutions
of learning. So, some high schools have written clauses
about piercings into their dress codes as a way to keep
students from sporting them. But, it seems that this has
been ineffective, because students continue to wear such
piercings outside of school hours. Perhaps the schools’
attempts at censorship even unintentionally encourage students
to continue to rebel.
Body jewelry is fun, unique, and relatively
inexpensive. Someone considering getting a piercing
should remember that good hygiene and diligent care is required
to prevent infection. There is also a chance of scarring,
especially with nose piercings. Lastly, tongue piercings
can initially make eating uncomfortable, and can even cause
some people to speak with a lisp. If you are willing to
take these small risks, then you should find a reputable place
to get your piercing. Remember that you will also have to
pay for the jewelry itself as well as cleaning solution.
That said, most body jewelry is relatively
inexpensive.
