Purchasing Wholesale Costume Jewelry

As a student, I spent a couple of summers working in a fashion accessory shop at the mall in my small hometown. A bunch of different products were sold there, but the most popular merchandise was without a doubt the costume jewelry.  Customers liked it because it was pretty and unique, and also because it was priced very reasonably.  In fact, it seemed like such a good deal that I started to wonder how my boss was even able to make much of a profit on it.  So, I asked her.  Her answer was that she purchased her stock from wholesale costume jewelry manufacturers.  She said that, after some research and some trial and error, she’d been able to figure out how to purchase jewelry that was in demand from wholesalers for a low cost.

The trick was to shop around.  There are all kinds of wholesalers out there.  My boss attended trade shows, read catalogues, and did research on the Internet.  In fact, a lot of her orders were made over the Internet, as well, because of the wide variety of unique and affordable items that are available online.  Anyone who has a retail license is able to benefit from wholesalers, as long as it can be proven that the items will be resold.  Buying in bulk allows for a wider profit margin, because the more you buy, the less you pay per item.  As long as you order items that people want to buy, and price them reasonably, chances are good that you will make a profit.

The real trick is in figuring out what wholesale costume jewelry to buy, and then knowing who to buy it from.  There is no easy way to learn this, but it can be done.  It requires an awareness of current trends, and knowing your customer base and their demands.  One must be aware that today’s fads will likely not be popular by tomorrow.  However, other types of jewelry are timeless, and will always be popular, so a retailer can’t go wrong buying those.  A successful retailer should buy a combination of trendy jewelry and classic pieces to cover all of their bases.  The exception is if it is a speciality store.  My boss mentioned that most wholesaler’s prices are very competitive, but that it’s also wise to shop around for the best deal possible.  She said that it was more work in the beginning, and after she’d gained some experience, it became easier because she knew which retailers were reputable.  Her success story is proof that you can have a profitable business if you work hard enough and make smart decisions.
